OK Kiddo - this is my 20,000th answer here!. The theme is obviously - revenge!. You have it backwards, my dear!. It was Montressor who took revenge on Fortunato - who was not so fortunate after all!.

Was it right!? Of course not!. Did Fortunato really insult Montressor a thousand times as he claims in his opening sentence!? Of course not!. These are two bickering old men who are both addicted to the taste of the grape - trying to outdo each other!.

Think of it this way - in modern terms!. Montressor put in new sod on his lawn!. Fortunato put in new sod AND new flowers!. Montressor got a new car - Fortunato got a new car AND took his wife to Florida!. Back and forth it goes!. Each time, Montressor gets just a little bit more jealous and works on his plan!. One day, he gets so mad that he decides to do it!. Surely you have known of bickering neighbors like that!?

Then for the next 50 years, he has to live with it!. Mrs!. Fortunato never knows what happened to her husband and every time Montressor goes to sleep at night, he knows he is sleeping upstairs with Fortunato's bones in the basement!.

No, I am a non violent person and I don't think it was right but it made for a great story! If I was in his place I would not kill him but I would probably retaliate in a way that made him want to be dead!. It would be nonviolent though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
