Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Pain box or Agony Box

The box slowly induced the feelings equivalent to heat sufficient to burn his hand to ash!. Pain was the axis of the test; the Bene Gesserit wanted to see which way he turned!.

In Heretics of Dune, also by Frank Herbert, this item is called an agony box!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only reference I heard made to it is THE BOX!.
The ceremony involved the assassination needle called the Gom Jabbar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Dune_(novel!.!.!.
The 'boy's' first given name is Paul Atreides, until he joins the sand worm-riding Fremen on his planet, who rename him Muad'Dib!. He lives on the Fremen spice diet (he and his mother Jessica had to escape a plot against their House), and becomes what he is renamed!.

The female society-- whose consciousness through the test called the 'spice agony,' which meant they ingested some spice and if they lived they became cognizant of many things, especially when they reach the level of Reverend Mother-- is called the Bene Gesserit!.

They not only kept alive the race's memories, but also some plotted to make a male Bene Gesserit, called a Kwisatz Haderach, which is how this story all ties in together with Paul/Muad'Dib and the societies on and around Arrakis!.

Great book, that first one!. I didn't care for the others!. I read Dune a few times, yet still found I needed a memory boost from Wiki!.

ADD: I see no word about a box here, nor do I remember one!. If any is in there (the vaguest of memory), it is as a simple pain test to discourage Paul and the rebellious Jessica, who ate spice while pregnant with Paul's sister, born prescient, before sending them away!. I think this box must not be in the first book!.

I do see that Paul/Muad'Dib 'takes the Water of Life' in 'Dune,' because he knows he's not fully prescient as he wants to be!. This puts him near death for three weeks, and when he awakes, he IS the Kwistaz Haderach, and can see the past, present and future at will!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
