I don't know whether you would call it insanity or hysteria, but the scene that was taken out (the extra scene) shows Abigail to be pretty nuts!. She is actually talking to John about what their life is going to be like after Elizabeth is dead!. I think that is a little of both!.

And Elizabeth was pretty hysterical when they came to get her and take her away!.

Did you know that the latest scientific findings seem to lean towards ergot poisoning as the cause of the whole thing!? Ergot is a mold that grows on rye grain that has hallucinogenic properties like LSD!.
