Refer back to what they said on the theme of "To Kill a Mockingbird" (a rough quote that I remember from reading it): You can kill any bird you want, but you can't shoot a mockingbird!. It's a sin!. All they do is sing their hearts out and don't harm anyone!."
It's the same thing with Boo: All his life, he's been living in a crummy house!.!.!.he's inside looking out at the world go by!. However, he never does anything to harm anyone!.!.!.this is represented by the gifts he has given to Scout and Jem through the knothole!.
He did something he's never done before: get out of his house and save jem and scout from bob ewell!. So yes, he did kill Bob for the protection of Jem and Scout!. In a way, he's a mockingbird!. The sheriff wanted to say Bob just fell into the knife to keep him from "killing a mockingbird" or in this case, put Boo Radley in jail!.

By the way, have you seen the movie!? It's a great interpretation of the book, I highly recommend it!Www@QuestionHome@Com
