And it did say that Carlisle changed Edward into a vampire as a baby to save him and stuff!. I think this weird age thingy applies to some of his brothers and sisters too!. And his mom, if I'm not mistaken!.

They're refering to people who have been changed into a vampire within the last year!. There is still human blood in them and they are very powerful!. also, Edward was dying of the Spanish Influenza in 1918 when Carlisle changed him!. He was 17 at the time!. Alice was changed by James, actually, the hunter in the book Twilight!. She was the only one, other than Bella, who ever escaped him!. Emmett was mauled by a grizzly bear and was very close to death!. Rosalie found him and carried him back to Carlisle!. She didn't think she was strong enough to change him herself!. Jasper was changed by Maria and was used to help an army of newborn vampires!. Alice used her future seeing abbilities and saw that Jasper needed her!. She found him, and then saw the Cullen clan, and joined their family!. Esme jumped off of a cliff after her baby died, and was brought to the hospital morgue!. Carlisle changed her soon after!. Same with the rest of the Cullen family - the ages they represent in the books (not their "real" ages, the ages their bodies are stuck in) are the ages at which they were changed!.
