In an antiquarian's shop I read in a book about anglo-saxons and about the Juttish saxons,it said they called themselves that name meaning"The tall ones"!. Can any one elaborate on that theory!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe it has to do with a translation of the name into English and with some obscure literary references!.
The Jutes are referred to by multiple names and "the tall one" is a translation of the Norse and Old English meaning of the word which means giants!.
As for literary references they make a brief appearance in Beowulf!.
Another possibility I would suggest is that given what I know (though be it not a lot) of the Epic of Beowulf and the history of that time period, the Anglo-Saxon people were considered giants by the Celtic people of what is now England and that too may have lead to the reference of "the tall ones!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

someone described as jutish would be a jute, which is a member of a germanic tribe, from denmark, i think, (a place called jutland, sounds made up i know lol) they came to england and consequently settled in kent!. hence they became anglo saxons!. um, its also a word used to describe an old english dialect, from about 5th cent AD, which obviously came about due to the settlers!. im not sure about the tall one bit, it may be the origin of the place name!? most place names have deeper old meanings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I advise you to ask this question in history!. I have never heard of Juttish Saxons but the Jutes were a germanic tribe like the Angles and Saxons who all invaded and settled in Britain from the early 5th century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Try the History section!. I'm not really sure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
