Question: A question about the author of the Harry Potter series!?
Not long ago, Ms!. Rowlings announced in front of a huge audience (largely made up of college kids, or so I was given to understand) that she had written the Dumbledore character as a gay man!.
I must confess, this confused and upset me!. I went back and re-read all the books, and watched every movie that's been out so far (for probably the seventh or eighth time), and I see not a single HINT that the old wiz was gay!.!.!.for that matter, I don't see anything there that would suggest ANY sexual involvement!.
Was Ms!. Rowlings "playing to her audience", d'ya think, or did I miss something!?!?
Since she has announced the "pre-quel", I'm sure she'll be expounding on this revelation!.!.!.but I have to wonder!.!.!.is she being intellectually honest, here, or is she simply creating yet more controversy in order to sell even more books!?
Seriously, she is already one of the most famous writers of her time, and incredibly wealthy!.!.!.so WHY!?!?!?!?!?

Let me clarify!.!.!.in a "pre-quel", she can easily go back into Dumbledore's life and create a sexual entanglement for him with a character we already know, or even bring a "previously unknown" character in to fill the void in Dumbledore's hidden love life!.
And, yes!.!.!.controversy SELLS, Hun!.
Yeah, she's already got all the money she can ever spend, but since when was that enough for anyone!?!?
Incredible wealth only seems to generate a driving desire for more, MORE!.!.!.MORE!!!!!!
What do you think!?!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yup, she created quite a stir with her declarations!.
I never saw it coming!.
I don't see Dumbledore as gay either!. And no, I'm not homophobic!.
Even if there was another book in which she would develop this story, I wouldn't buy it or read it!. It wouldn't add up much to the whole plot and Potter mystique!.
I wonder why she came up with this all of a sudden!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He's a Professor, and it is a children's book!. It is very possible she envisioned him as gay, but their would be no point in writing in anything overtly sexual in a "children's book"!. Besides what exactly do you think a gay professor would be like!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

ahhhhhh

Is it ok to see a nice older man who mentors a young boy as being gay, without the possibility of him being a child molester!?

Is it ok for Dumbledore to be gay!.!.!.a lifelong bachelor!.!.!.and still to be a positive influence in Harry Potter's life!?

Would you trust Dumbledore around your young boy!? after all, he IS gay!.!.!.

knowing Dumbledore to be gay, I would still send my son to Hogwarts and trust that my son will be safe!.!.!.and I would hope for him to have a mentor like Dumbledore, whether he be gay or straight!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think she's doing it to create more controversy!. I think that she honestly wrote the character of Dumbledore as a gay man!. But, because it is mainly a children's book, she couldn't right out say he was gay or make him do anything that would have made people aware that he was gay otherwise certain parents would have wanted her burned for exposing their kids to a gay book character!.
And JK Rowling did mention that Dumbledore had been in love with Grindelwald (or whatever that guy's name is) and that's why Dumbledore had such a hard time killing the evil wizard!. Read here for more information: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Albus_Dumbl!.!.!.

I honestly don't believe this was just a publicity stunt!. And there have been very subtle hints throughout the series which make the reader think that maybe there was more to Dumbledore than meets the eye!. I mean, she's the author and if she's always envisions Dumbledore as being gay, why should it matter to us!? At the press conference where she told people she thought of him as gay, she had a back story about him falling in love but that it was a tragedy for him, which sort of proves how much thought she put into it and from that, you can guess that she honestly thought of Dumbledore as being gay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, it's not stated in any book, so it's not canon; if you don't want him to be gay, he doesn't have to be!.

While it is true that there is no evidence of homosexuality, there is none of him being heterosexual, either!.

She pictured Dumbledore as gay, and she first admitted this to the filmmakers of HP6 when they had Dumbledore talking about a previous (female) love interest in the screenplay!.

And, sorry, JKR isn't like that!. She just isn't!. She didn't do this to make money; and since when has being successful been a sin!?

And why did this upset you!? That seems a tiny bit prejudice to me!.!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with GRIM, what would be the point of having a gay professor in a childrens book when its entirely concentrated on the 16 or 17 year old protagonist!? Wouldnt it just end sales immediately if suddenly the day before it came out, news spread that children were reading a book that has witchcraft and a gay character!?

Rowling merely envisioned Dumbledore as gay!. In my point of view it would explain why he was blinded by Grindewalds "friendship" to actually let him go after the death of his sister!. It also explains why Dumbledore was so apprehensive of confronting his former "best-friend" years later!. There had to have been a lot more in this relationship than just friendship, i mean dumbledore has no problem of going after voldemort!.

It can be taken from many different perspectives, but as a gay guy and fan of the series, i can see it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When I first hear this news, I did went over all the series in order to find a hint about it, however I was failed as well!. One reason for this which comes to my mind is homophobia!.

Such as, maybe she has thought of writing dumbledore character as a gay man but didn't know how to express this in a children book series!. Dumbledore is highly charismatic and a role model for Harry Potter and rest of the characters, thus have an influence on the ones reading the book as well!. Maybe she didn't want to "disappoint" some of her readers by making obvious that Dumbledore (or any other character in the series for that matter) is gay!.

Well, until the end of 5th book, I always thought Snape was gay and was in love with James Potter!. heheheWww@QuestionHome@Com
