Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Anne of Green Gables, The Secret Garden and A Little Princess are all considered children's classics, but, as an adult, I still read and enjoy them!. (I've heard Animal Farm referred to as a children's classic!. I don't agree!.) I still think an 18 year old should read these books and will enjoy them!.

Anne of Green Gables is actually a series of books which begins with Anne at 11 and ends with Anne as an adult with grown children!. It's a wonderful series of books which I would highly recommend!. I believe you'll be able to understand the books and really enjoy them, too!. (The series includes: Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars aka Anne of Windy Willows, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside!.) It's far more than a children's classic series!.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (who wrote Anne of Green Gables) also wrote a couple of adult novels you may enjoy: A Tangled Web and The Blue Castle!.

If you think you would enjoy some classic mystery stories, I'd recommend one of Agatha Christie's mysteries such as And Then There Were None!. It's really good!.

I'd agree that you may enjoy Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier!.

You may appreciate some other classics like:
-A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (his shortest novel and easiest to understand)
-The Call of the Wild by Jack London
-Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling
-The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson
-Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (Some believe she is difficult to understand, but this is one of her shorter novels and the book that gave me a love for reading!.)
-The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
-To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

If none of these help, you might want to start by reading some classic short stories!. For instance, O!. Henry wrote many truly wonderful stories that are easily understood!. You can read some of them online: http://www!.online-literature!.com/o_henry!.!.!.

I hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you think Anne of Green Gables is too juvenile, try Anne of Avenly- its the sequel and I think its much better!.

Other great classics include:

Little Women
Jo's Boys (Little Women sequel)
Pride and Prejudice
Invisible Man
The Stranger
Importance of Being Earnest
Scarlet Letter
Gone With the Wind
Canterbury Tales

Good modern literature:
Farenheit 451
Handmaid's Tale
Water for Elephants
Kite Runner
Oryx and Crake
the Dante Club

there are many more!. I suggest you search for a book club that suits your interests and reading level!. That way you'll have suggestions for reading and a group to discuss the novels with!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi,
I'm shocked that no one here as yet mentioned some of the most "classic" tiles written for the younger/counter culture types!. Here's a few
1!. Catcher in the Rye- J!.D!. Salinger
2!. Johnny Got His Gun- Dalton Trumbo
3!. On the Road-Jack Kerouac
4!. Night-Eli Weisel
5!. 1984-George Orwell
6!. Of Mice and Men-John Steinbeck
7!. The Bell Jar-Sylvia Plath
8!. Slaughter House-Five- Kurt Vonnegut
9!. Farewell to Arms-Ernest Hemingway
-All of these books are written in a very tight, terse, spare and clean style!. They are very easy to read, but they are considered "giants" of twentieth-century American/English Literature!. None of these are like "Wuthering Heights!." I think you'll really enjoy all of these!. All of them are about young people coming of age!. They're at a critical point in their lives!. Best of luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee!.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding!.

Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell!.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte!.

Any of Jane Austen's books!.

Any Shakespeare plays!.

Catcher in the Rye by J!.D!. Salinger!.

These are just a couple to get you started; all of them are excellent for any age level, really!.

If you want to read Anne of Green Gables, then you should!. It's enjoyable, and if you like it, there's quite a few sequels, if I recall correctly!.

I also recommend you persevere with Wuthering Heights - even if you find the beginning a little tedious, you'll get a lot out of it!. :)

Hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Anne Green Gables is for all ages (maybe that's why you may think it suitable for children); I love Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea--I'm 22 yrs old!.

I didn't enjoy Wuthering Heights either!. Apart from its complexity I found it a little depressing and it made me antsy!. It takes a lot of commitment!.

I really enjoyed Animal Farm and A Little Princess!. I have not read The Secret Garden, though (but the movie was good)!.

I also recommend
1984
Pride and Prejudice
Catch-22
The Great Gatsby
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Count of Monte CristoWww@QuestionHome@Com

"The Great Divorce," C!. S!. Lewis, is written in simple, clear English, and is very worthwhile!.

Some modern classics include "Expecting Adam," Martha Beck,
"West with the Night," Beryl Markham, and
"Bridge to Terabithia," Paterson!.

You might also enjoy Alexandra Robbins' "The Overachievers;" it's about 17-18 year olds in high school and college, and "Soul Mates and Twin Flames," Elizabeth Clare Prophet!. Very readable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

some of my my favorites would be Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, Great expectations by Charles dickens, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by mark twain, jane eyre by Charlotte Bronte, lord of the flies by: William golding!.!.!.these are just a few, but i really recommend them, especially for your age!. also I think that Anne of green ables is great for any age, and it helps that the sequels deal with age being in the twenties!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
