Question: The God of Small Things!?
What is the role of catholcism in the novel and how is it portrayed!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The family of Ammu are Catholics!. They form the rich class of Ayimenem!. But actually Catholism has a very little direct role to play except that they are shown to be hard-handed and believers of caste system!. Mammachi is generous but is a strong supporter of classes!. She doesnt allow Paravans inside her house!. They banish Ammu for having affair with Velutha!. **Christianity doesn't support Caste system!.***

Then another incident which is rather surprising is the Conversion of the Irish priest whom Baby Kochamma loves!.
This is an inert incident but speaks volumes of the impact of Indian societry!. Perhaps, Roy wanted to say that inter-religion conversions are popular in India!.

So on the whole the role of Catholism is down just to being a small sect of people who really dont follow thei Christian religion strictly!. For once, they are English educated capitalists!. But Chacko, is not a capitalist!. He is a womaniser and supports labour movements!.

I think ancient social setups and not religion directs the path the novel takes!.
