I think it would be funnest to write about Lily/James while they were at Hogwarts!. If you do, it would make sense to include Snape somehow!. If you are planning to make this multi-chapter, including Snape will definitely help you increase the length of the fanfic!.

Maybe you could write about how James reacted when he found out Lily had broken off her friendship with Snape!. He probably started scheming right away :D!. Haha!. JKR said in an interview that James always suspected Snape harbored feelings deeper than friendship for Lily, so I'm sure the news that they were no longer friends would have pleased him!.

They would have been in!.!.!. what!.!.!. their fifth or sixth year of Hogwarts when that happened!? Yeah!. Something like that!. You could create some painful confrontation between Lily/Snape after they "broke up" with James thrown into the mixture somehow!. Maybe you could set it in a potions class with Slughorn!.!.!. Lily was always good at potions!. Snape's good at Potions too, obviously, so maybe you could find a way to work that into it!.!.!.

Or maybe you could write about when Lily agreed to go out with James!. You could have Snape accidentally walk in on them kissing or something!.!.!. aww man, that'd be sad!. Hehe :)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Okay, I'm a real tyro at fan fiction and creative writing

http://www!.life-after-harry-potter!.com/f!.!.!.

but here's what I did to come up with my book-length fan fiction:

Plot development!. Now, what I *started* doing was making an outline, writing down everything I already knew about every place and person in the mostly unformed story that was in my head!. I also had a few "scenes" in my head that I wrote down (like "The First Riddle")!.

Then I hit the "plot" wall!. What was the *whole* story going to be about!? I knew that it was going to star Luna, but what was the point of the story!? Her wandering around Hogwarts during her first year!? That hardly makes a good story!

I needed a Main Plot, a "unifying" theme, a struggle or goal which Luna would spend most of the story striving to reach - whether she knew it or not!.

I also needed several "sub plots", things for Luna to do that may or may not have something directly to do with the Main Plot, but certainly have an affect (whether direct or indirect) on the Main Plot and how she becomes involved with that!.

I started by writing plot ideas, looking for one that could operate as my Main Plot!. There were some things that I knew I wanted to have - scenes in my head that I wanted to write into the story!. I included these - for example, Luna's knowledge of The Quibbler shown in "The First Riddle" and in the books!. That was going to be important to my story - a sub plot, her use of this very specific "eidetic memory" talent!. Then there was the Ravenclaw door knocker that asks questions!. As you can see from "The First Riddle", Luna (oddly - which is perfect for her) seems to be forming some type of connection with the magical object!. She asks *it* questions, and it answers her!. Obviously, the knocker was going to be a recurring character in my story, and it has become a sub-plot!.

ANYWAY, I wrote down each plot, writing several things that I think might happen, and also writing down ways that I though each plot might connect with other plots!. In other words, I was writing, "what if Luna does this, or can do this, or discovers this, then what will happen, what might happen, and how might that tie in with the other plots"

After a few, I discovered one that I thought might make a good Main Plot!. It could be the main "goal" of the story, and the sub plots that I already had could be "satellite" plots which could be used to affect the Main Plot either directly or indirectly!.

After some more plot writing and evaluation, several days later I hit upon a reason that made my Main Plot a bust!. It simply could not be used, logically, with some of the sub-plots that I had already developed, or it simply wasn't entirely compatible with the books from the get go, I can't remember which!. In any case, I did more plots, and eventually arrived at my current Main Plot, #2, which has no logic problems with the books or anything that I already had planned to write!.

I worked for awhile, making certain that all of the sub plots I most wanted could fit in with my new Main Plot, especially all of those great scenes that I had already written!.

Then, my Main Plot became the impetus for further writing!. In other words, my Main Plot does a lot to direct which way the story goes!. Every time a start a fresh chapter, part of me is thinking, "how does this tie in with the Main Plot, or how will it lead to a tie-in with the Main Plot"!. Naturally, my chapters are greatly affected by this consideration!. You can especially see this at the end of "The Library of Magic", where a whole portion of story is added that introduces the Main Plot!. I didn't write this portion of the story for that purpose - I had already planned to write a "Madame Herophile" type of story!. BUT, as a fortune teller was at hand, the obvious thing was to use her to bring up the Main Plot, and so I did!.

SO, get a bunch of plots in an outline format!. Write what, generally, is the sequence of events in each plot, what *might* or *could* happen, and how each (as you think of them) might affect or tie in with the other plots!. Keep an eye open for a plot that can be used as your Main Plot!. When you find a likely candidate, make certain that your other plots tie in with it, and that everything works together reasonably!.

As an example, we can list some of the plots present in the first book!.
I) Main Plot - Harry has to defeat the evil wizard who murderer his parents, most especially he has to stop him from retrieving the Sorcerer's Stone
II Sub Plots
II!.A!. HP doesn't know he's a wizard, but has to find out
II!.B!. HP has to escape his Muggle step-parents to reach the school of magic
II!.C!. HP being in a school of magic (and learning magic) is a subplot in and of itself
II!.D!. HP makes friends and enemies at school (each can be a separate sub-plot)
II!.E!. The mirror of Erised
II!.F!. Norbert the Dragon
II!.G!.Fluffy and the Forbidden Corridor
II!.H!. The Forbidden Forest
II!.I!. Broom flying (and Quidditch)

I think you get the idea!. You can see how JKR ties in broom flying, for example, with the Forbidden Corridor and with Enemy Draco!. Norbert, also, is tied in with Enemy Draco!. Erised is tied in with the main plot (the resolution) and with the whole orphan thing and with school of magic!. Etc!. etc!.

I'd be happy to help as best I can if you have any more specific questions!. You can e-mail!.
