This question can break down into several branches!.

A person with a reading / print disability, can get such books in Web-braille format through the National Library Service for the Blind!. You do not have to be blind or even vision impaired!. With Dyslexia, Learning disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injuries, etc!., can also qualify!.

Such a person can also join Bookshare!.org which legally "provides modern books to its membership!.

"Bookshare!.org Library Now Free to All U!.S!. Students with Qualifying Disabilities

Memberships for U!.S!. schools and qualifying U!.S!. students of all ages including K-12, post-secondary and adult education, are now free, thanks to special funding from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP)!. Here's the announcement about the OSEP award!. To sign up for Bookshare!.org, please read more about student access!.

Bookshare!.org believes that people with print disabilities deserve the same ease of access to books and periodicals that people without disabilities enjoy!. The Bookshare!.org library provides print disabled people in the United States with legal access to over 37,750 books and 150 periodicals that are converted to Braille, large print or digital formats for text to speech audio!." Additionally, ANYONE can also access modern books online through your local library if that library has subscriptions to Netlibrary!.com or Overdrive!.com or a similar service -- both sources require that you sign up for an account through your local library; after that, you can access both spoken audio books which can be downloaded to an MP3 player with WMP DMR protection software and "e-books" which can be read on line while connected to the internet!. While reading these "e-books" books, you can take notes or place bookmarks which will be saved on the service's servers and will be available the next time you log on and open the book!. Again, these sources are free through your local cooperating library or state library system!.

Fictionwise!.com often runs specials on e-books to be read in a variety of formats on your computer which include you purchasing a book and then receiving the same about credited to your account for additional purchases -- so the book is essentially "free" to you once you've made the initial purchase!.

also, at various times, Microsoft Reader and Adobe reader have offered modern books for "free" as trials or ways to develop interest in the format!. I think the last time I saw something like this, Microsoft Reader was offering two books a month for free for six or nine months!. This would have been back in 2002 or so when the e-book readers were just getting going!. But I wouldn't be surprised if something similar popped up as these formats try to compete with the Kindle!.

It's all a matter of keeping an eye on the providers!. They are out there, but you have to be watching for them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is illegal!. Books are protected by Federal Copyright Laws until 70 years after the author's death!. And the sites that are bootlegging them have more viruses than the Center for Disease Control!. Don't steal!. If you want to read a book, use the library or buy it!. Pax-CWww@QuestionHome@Com

Modern books are still under copyright and are thus pretty much impossible to find for free in any form!. And if you find them, it's probably illegal!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Project Gutenberg has ebooks that are legal and out of copyright, but you're probably not going to find any that are more recent than the 1920s without having to pay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
