40,000 words is a novel but i wrote over 50,000 and its only 300 pages (150 peices of paper) and thats hand writed thats like 150 type, that doesnt sound long enough to be a novel!. but do you know, what di you think!?Www@QuestionHome@Com Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: According to Writer's Market - a well known and respected industry source, a work becomes a novel at 50 thousand words and goes up to 120 thousand or that range!. The average novel is 55 to 89 thousand words!. Never talk in terms of pages!. Authors always speak in terms of words!. If you talk pages, you will be marked as an amateur!. The reason why you wrote 50K and it was only 300 pages is because the pages you type and the pages in a book differ!. Industry standard is 250 words per page!. So you do the division!. 50,000 divided by 250 = 200 printed pages!. And never never print on both sides of the paper!! Publishers and editors will never read it!. also remember this -- you have to do at least one rewrite!. Stephen King's formula for a rewrite is Second Draft = First Draft - 10%!. So your book will shrink a bit!. And when and if you sell it and an editor gets hold of it, don't be shocked when it shrinks quite a bit more ! Don't worry about word counts or page numbers - when you are finished writing your story, it is done!. Worry about that stuff in the rewrite and the editing processes!. Flash Fiction is usually catagoried around a story with around 1000 words, but it's sometimes used for 200 and 2000 words!. A Short Short story is usually about 1000 and 7500 words!. A Novellete has now been considered anywhere from 7500 words to about 15000 words!. A Novella is considered to be 15,000 and 40,000 words!. However, many publishers and publications are now accepting Short Stories up to 15000 words now!.
