Oh my goodness!. To Kill a Mockingbird is my all time favorite book!. Okay, how do I start!. Atticus is Scout and Jem's father!. Their mother died when Scout and Jem were very young!. Atticus is a lawyer which may contribute to the reason why they call him by his first name!. Another reason that they may call him is because since he is both a mother and father to them, it adds a more personal and respectable level to their relationship!. These people are white!. Calpurnia is their maid!. She is black!. This is odd because it was a very segregated society and calpurnia was seen as equal!. Ms!. Dubois does not die!.!.!. I don't know where you got that Idea!. The Radley family, including Boo, are all white!. If they were black, they wouldn't be neighbors to the Finch's!. The story is set in 1930's Southern Alabama; it just wouldn't have been any other way!. The Finch family, all their neighbors, and the Ewell family are all white as are the children that go to school with Jem and Scout!.
Calpurnia is the Finch family housekeeper!. She is different from most, though, because she basically raised the children when their mother died!.
The kids call their father Atticus because that is his name!. It is not a disrespectful thing, and they recognize him as father, but are in a more comfortable situation with him!.
Yes, Mrs!. DuBose died!. She sent one of the flowers that Jem had destroyed to him after her death which set him off!.
