Question: Can anyone suggest some good books for a present to my husband!?
He likes to read things like Fyodor Dostoevsky and that Prince Machiavelli one and who knows what other weird books!. He's very intellectual and I wanted to give him a welcome back present (he's coming home from a business trip) but I have no idea what to give him!. Please give me some suggestions and a short summary of the book!. I really appreciate it!. Thanks so much!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Do you know what he's read by Dostoyevsky!? His best are:

Crime and Punishment
The Brothers Karamatzov (spelling!?)
The Idiot
Notes from the Underground
The Devils / The Possessed (same novel, goes by 2 titles)

They're all very intense, very Russian!.

He just might like Joseph Conrad!. His writing is very different from Dostoyevksy's, but he had the same amazing psychological insight!. People who like one often like the other:

Heart of Darkness
Nostromo
Under Western Eyes (Conrad's response to Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment")
The Secret Agent

"Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes agrees, more or less, with the ideas Machiavelli put forth in "The Prince," so he might like that!. And maybe "The Republic" by Plato, which influenced Machiavelli!.

Your husband sounds like he enjoys the best of Russian Literature, so I'd suggest Ivan Tergenev's FATHERS AND SONS or Nikolai Gogol's DEAD SOULS!.

Machiavelli's THE PRINCE kind of stands alone, but something a bit similar in theme and topic is Cark von Clausewitz' ON WAR!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
