Question: Discworld or Harry Potter!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
There is no competition!. Discworld because of it pure enjoyment!. PoTTER is good but it deriavitive (however you spell it lol ), but is still a good read!. Pratchett all the way!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Potter definitely!. The characters and story arc are fantastic!.

But you can't really compare the two series, or the writers either as they are very different!.

Personally I really really dislike fantasy set in "other worlds" so that automatically rules out me enjoying something like Discworld!. And the only Pratchett I've ever liked was Good Omens, that's because of Gaiman writing it with him!. I just don't find Pratchett interesting, funny or engaging, but I do Rowling!. I like fantasy based in a world I recognise but through a skewed mirror!.

also I would class Discworld as more of a "fantasy" book than I would Potter!. And I think Potter appeals to people that aren't necessarily fans of fantasy, unlike Discworld!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I enjoyed the Harry Potter books but I have never felt like re-reading them, whereas I re-read some of the Discworld novels quite frequently, especially the ones about Granny Weatherwax, who is my favourite character!. So I would say Discworld!. But it's a very variable series, I like some much more than others, and some I don't care for at all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I feel that Rowling's books are excellent - and for developing themes over time!. A good commercial enterprise, as Charles Dickens knew well for serialisation!. It is unfair to compare them with Pratchett as they are so disparate!. They are both 'fantastic' in their own ways!.

However, Pratchett has such a range of scenarios and characters, in the Discworld and elsewhere!. Once you have read a few of the novels, who could forget Rincewind!. 'The Luggage', The Librarian, Sam Vimes, 'The Hordes', Golems, Trolls, policing policies and empire-building!? !.!.and - !.!.!. sorry, I'l stop it! Fans will know!. The meshing of Shakespearean scenes/quotes, and many other writers, and past historical events, with modern political happenings is seemlessly drawn!.

Compared with 'Potter', each book can be read on its own but whole worlds can be visited with Mr Pratchett!.

The 'bottom line', of course, is that the Discworld series is really all about earth, its politicians and ordinary people and the condition of humanity!. They run the gamut of all human experience and emotions!. We all recognise people - or creatures - from our own experience!. He will be popular for a long time, as Shakespeare is, for the same reasons!. He is funny, wise, knowledgeable and perceptive - and he can tell a good tale!. In 'Potter' the 'magic' is magical! With Pratchett, the magic is a smokescreen or a vehicle for the tale!. He is also very gentle with the reader!. You don't have to know about Shakespeare or be 'in' on the jokes!. Many chidren I know, as for 'Potter', read the books on their own level and rave about them!. When they re-visit them in years to come, I think that they will see more in them than in the 'Potter' books!. What more do you want!?!. I wish I were his agent!

Miss Rowling deserves congratulation for her wonderful creations and hard work!. I m glad that she has such deserved recognition!. She adds so much to our culture and provides so much pleasure for children and adults alike!.

But, as you ask, it's 'Three yeses' for Mr Pratchett!

In my view, they should both be honoured for outstanding contriburions to literature, Miss Rowling as a Dame and Mr Pratchett - knighted!. As long as the Honours system lasts, they are as good as anybody!

I hope for 'my favourite', Mr Pratchett, that this will happen soon, in view of his declared condition, so that he will be able to appreciate it!.

I am sure that contributors will join with me in wishing Mr Pratchett the best possible outcome for his condition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Discworld, hands down - it's intelligent, amusing, and suitable for adults!.

Potter, on the other-hand, is a middle-of-the-road stock fantasy for kidsWww@QuestionHome@Com

I think Discworld has a more adult leaning and is outrageously funny!. Harry Potter is more complex and probably has a wider reading audience!. I have to sit on the fence - eeek!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Duh, Discworld!.

Harry Potter's ok for kids but Discworld is hilarious!.

Lets hope Pratchett can remain well and active as long as possible considering his condition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Discworld!. Easily!. Potter is good in its own way, but Discworld far outstrips it in terms of intelligence, wit and humour!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
