Lately I've been into reading books like Memoirs of a Geisha, the Other Boleyn Girl, the Boleyn Inheretence, Abundance: a Novel of Marie Antoinette, etc!. What are some very engaging books that will keep my interest that have historical fact behind them, and is preferable about a strong female character, like the other books I've named!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Here are a few: Margaret George's novels: --Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles --Memoirs of Cleopatra --Helen of Troy --Mary, Called Magdalene some George Sand novels: --Marianne --Consuelo Pope Joan by Lawrence Durrell Pope Joan by Donna Cross My Name Is Sei Shonagon by Jan Blensdorf Romola by George Eliot Royal Highness by Thomas Mann Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All by Allen Gurganus not typically historical (they were contemporary novels), but of great historical interest: --Roxana by Daniel Defoe --Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe --The Bostonians by Henry James (I suspect this would really fascinate you!.) two of the best historical novels ever written: I, Claudius by Robert Graves Claudius the God by Robert Graves ADDED: How could I have forgotten Sigrid Undset's books!? Check out especially the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy and Gunnar's Daughter, but be sure to get the tranlations that were done very recently!. The only book I've read of the above is The Other Boleyn Girl, and I wouldn't say that the two are similar at all outside of both being well written historical fiction, but if you like historical fiction, I'd give this a try!. Especially since you mention strong female characters, and the main character in Outlander is very strong, indeed!. A warning, though-it has a very strong romantic element, and (I don't know how old you are, are whether you're comfortable with this kind of stuff or not) there's a lot of sex in it!. If you don't mind that, though, it's a great series! I'm on the third one now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Well, I haven't read too many books like the kind you're looking for, but I do recommend the Royal Diaries series!. They are the fictional journals of various princesses from different time periods and countries (and of course there's historical fact to back everything up)!. I really enjoy reading them (and I love historical fiction), so maybe you will as well!. I've heard the Outlander Series is pretty good historical fiction-wise, too (several of my family members have read and enjoyed it)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com I love the Outlander series by Diana Gaboldon!. ~6 books total, #7 on the way~ (1700's Scotland and 1940's england ,so wonderful !!!!)
