Question: Who's the best modern day writer!?
Please don't say Meyer or Rowling!. As much as I like Harry Potter I'd never go so far as to say she's the best writer!. It's nice commercial fiction but it's obviously not the best written fiction!.

Of course, the two--commercial and literary--are not mutually exclusive!. There's nothing wrong with saying Stephen King is the best writer!.

And, no offense, but please only answer if you're a bookworm and have come across many different authors!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is a wonderful question!. The answer is Phillip Roth!. Again and again he writes accessible novels about the American experience!. He doesn't write over anybody's head and his stories are satisfying: I highly recommend The Human Stain!. Now consider John Updike if you want perfect writing: his sentences are wonders!. I recommend Witches of Eastwick(the movie polluted what he was trying accomplish with that book)!. Some say Don Delillo but I struggled through Underworld and I was just so glad when it was over!. I consider the author of Freedomland, Richard Price, one of the best thriller writers with more on his mind than just mystery!. Freedomland is extraordinary!. Dennis Lehane also started with mysteries but Mystic River has put him into the mainstream!. And there is nothing wrong with Stephen King: I still love Misery, Salem's Lot, Night Shift!. These are great stories!. James Ellroy is a great crime, mystery novelist!. Elizabeth George is also a great mystery writer-heads above most!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I will first say that two of my favorite authors to read are J!.R!.R!. Tolkien and C!.S!. Lewis, because of the intelligence, creativity, and profundity of their writing!. But, I do understand that you asked for a modern writer, and neither of those two are "modern" in the sense that they are still currently writing books in the modern times!.

So, I will have to say that my favorite modern author would probably have to be Dean Koontz!. I recently read his book called Watchers, and it was the first book in a long time that I really, absolutely had trouble putting down!. Koontz can so skillfully write a book with excellent suspense, a unique and original storyline, and well-crafted and believable characters!. So, in the modern world of writing, I would certainly vote for Koontz as one of the most talented authors!. And I do understand that this is a very personal question that really depends on a person's taste in books, but I really enjoy Koontz as a modern author!.!.!.

Best wishes!Www@QuestionHome@Com

James Pterson has sold more then any one in the world, not even Dan Brown or Rowling!

Unfortunately it is comercially that we can measure the living ones!

When they die and the work keeps on selling then they become classics and we can measure them again!

I would add Paolo Coelho! as well even though he is a bit unusual!

I think Stephen King is probably second only to James paterson!.

But then again you know it that James co- authors his books, so !.!.!. it is down to Stephen King!
But he is not shining as the star he used to! Now he is rather fading away!

But then again there are quite a few writers that have writen only a book or two and are just great! Look at Harper Lee who wrote only one book and it was just ooutstanding!

If youi want to consider such authors, you will get a much longer list, including Cormack mc Carthey with "The Road " and "No Country for Old man" or ""Umberto Eco with The nmsae of the Rose" or "Haruki Murakami with The Wing up bird cronicle and quite a few others" or "Isamail Cadare with The succesor" or "Ian MArtel with Life of Pi" or "the five people you meet in heaven or tuesday with morrie"!

you see evryone gets an angle, and can not be original fo to long! because its only an angle that they can really bring to the world!
