Question: Has your favorite author(s) ever written a book that made you question your confidence in them!?
Let's say you are a big fan of a certain author and you collect every book/poem/story they have ever written!. Then, one day, you read one of their books for the first time and discover that it is absolutely horrible!. Does that shake your confidence in their ability to produce quality work!? Does it change your opinion of them as great writers!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Having a crisis of Faulkner, are we!? Don't say I didn't warn you!

(Sorry, I had to!.)

That said, sure, authors have weak points!. I'd say the more self-indulgent the author, the weaker their weak points are, though--Anthony Burgess comes to mind instantly, as having written some brilliant novels and some execrable ones!.

It doesn't change my opinion though--Burgess, for example, still wrote 'A Clockwork Orange' and thus is still worthy of my respect, no matter what degree of self-indulgent pabulum he also published!. But it's obviously crucial that they produce _good_ work first, for balance's sake if nothing else!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Authors like real people can have good and bad days!. Their one book can be a experiment into another genre of writing or just a way to get out of a rut!. I have read a few authors that I absolutely loved one book, but then another left something to be desired!. I give them another try on the third book, and then I decide whether I want to continue reading books by that author!. My author is John Grisham!. I love his courtroom books, but I was disappointed when he tried writing the other kind of stories for a while!. I have heard that he has started writing the courtroom books again, and I am looking forward to reading them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

At first I used to but I realized that it depends on the person and the author isn't writing to fit your personal likes and dislikes!. A lot of authors do have books that are less interesting or are totally different than usual and I think sometimes it may be to get more people interested in their work!. I can't really say that I've come across a horrible book!. My favorite author (Philippa Gregory) has had a few books that I didn't really care for!. They were less exciting than previous ones or they were on a subject that didn't hold my interest!. No it doesn't really shake my confidence and no it doesn't change my opinion of them!. :]Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. I don't like all of my favorite musician's songs, but I still think they are the best!. Same goes for TV shows and movies and all of that other stuff!. But I do think that my confidence in them might be shaken (slightly/temporarily) if the poor quality work is recent!. It's a little easier to forgive poor quality when it's their early stuff!. Ultimately, though, I won't easily forget any particular author's magnum opus!. A good book is good and a great book is great regardless of any other less respectable works!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I try not to judge my authors on one or two books but rather on their work as a whole!. Any author can have one or two bad books!. We don't know what is going on in their lives etc!. Stephen King is a great example of a good book/bad book author!. I love some of his work, but there is some that I question whether he was on acid when he wrote it - BUT overall I feel he is a great writer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Julie Garwood was totally loved for writing books set in historic times, but now that she started writing her books set in modern times, it's just not the same!. She's a great writer and all, but I believe her novels were alot better before compared to now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I love the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, but the 4th book, The Final Warning, was very, very disappointing!. I know how greatly he can write, and I guess that one was just a setback!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
