Question: Is my book a first edition!?
ok i have what i think is a first edition harry potter goblet of fire book!. although it does not have the serial number on it it just says "first edition" !.!.!.!. so does anyone know if it is a first!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can tell if a book is a first edition by looking on the copyright page!. There is normally a row of numbers and the lowest number in the sequence tells you the edition number!. i!.e!. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 or 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2!.

However, according to the Bloomsbury website, UK first edition copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have the words First Edition printed in place of the numbers!.

The same website states that there were 1 million first edition copies of HP and the Goblet of Fire printed!.

If it says First edition on the copyright page, it probably is!.

However -- there are more than one first edition!. There is a first British edition, a first American edition, a first paperback edition!. The actual first is more valuable!.

ANd -- the value of a first edition vareies widely with 1) how important the book is seen to be at the time and 2) how many copies of the first edition were printed!. The print run of Harry Potter was huge, so the value of a first edition of the later books is not very great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It might well be a first edition, but as with all collectibles the value is in the scarcity of an item - and so many copies were in the first edition of this book (I believe the figure is something like 4 million) yours will have no special value at all, unless I am very much mistaken!.

Now, if you had a first edition of HP and the Philosopher's Stone!.!.!.!.!.!.that WOULD be different!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
