An allegory is when a story means something "deeper" than what it literally says!. Young Goodman Brown is an allegory for many things-- mistrust, human arrogance and hipocricy, among others!. Think about how Brown feels at the end of the story when he discovers all the towns people at the coven--he suddenly forgets that he was going as well, and just can't believe how evil his community is!
