Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Shakespeare didn't specify what the susbstance was--he just described it as "a dram of poison"!. As to whether he made it up or not, you'd have to do some research on that!. I know that the technology wasn't too advanced back then, and there were rules of how you could touch a corpse (particularly a woman), so there may have been some chemical to make you appear dead!. No herbs or drink can feign death!. Romeo could have drank one of many potions!. Since his potion killed him, it could be almost anything!.
