Question: Fiction books about the victorian era!?
I really loved the Gemma Doyle trilogy, and I've been looking for other books like it!. I know I'm probably being overly picky about this, but what I'd like in the book are;
-Takes place in the victorian era
-Should be fiction
-Main character should be a girl
-Preferably takes place in England, but that's not necessary
-It doesn't have to talk about corsets and balls (although that would be nice)

also, please nobody say Twilight!

Thank youuu!. =]Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have three main suggestions!. My suggestions don't contain the fantasy type of things that the Gemma Doyle trilogy has, but they are still fiction!. The suggestions I am going to give you are historical fiction and take place in about the Victorian Era:

-Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery (it has eight books overall, the first one being Anne of Green Gables)!. This series takes place in the early 1900s, and is about a hot-headed, stubborn orphan girl who finds a way of fitting into the little town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island (Canada)!. As the series progresses, the main character (Anne) grows up, marries, etc!.!.!.I really enjoyed the Victorian-ish setting of these, and I also really enjoy watching the movies/mini-series based on these!.

-Any of the books by Jane Austen, such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, etc!.!.!.Most of her books are about women of the 1800s and their attempts at fitting into society and finding romance/love, if you didn't already know!.

-Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - This is about four sisters in the 1860s, and it portrays how the sisters grow up, find romance/love, etc!.!.!.

Sorry if those don't contain the fantasy that the Gemma Doyle trilogy contains, but those are all great reads that take place near or in the Victorian Era!. I escpecially suggest you read the Anne of Green Gables series, because it also starts out with a young girl arriving somewhere new (after she is adopted) and then her relationship with the friends that she makes, just as in the Gemma Doyle series!.

You might enjoy some of the novels that were actually written in the Victorian era!.

'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte, 'North and South' and 'Wives and Daughters' by Mrs Gaskell, 'Far From the Madding Crowd' by Thomas Hardy, are all good Victorian novels with interesting heroines!.

Jane Austen's novels were written a little earlier than the Victorian period, but they are also books that you might enjoy, 'Pride and Prejudice' is generally the most popular one, and has a very appealing heroine!.

'Daddy Long-Legs' by Jean Webster is an absolutely delightful book, set at the turn of the last century, and although not set in England it has a wonderful heroine and marvellous descriptions of life at a girls' college at that time!. very entertaining!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Try Tess of d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy!. His work is right at the end of the Victorian era and deals with the issues regarding the nascent stages of industrialization!. His novel Jude, the Obscure does not have a female protagonist, but there is a poignant female character!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What about "Picnic at Hanging Rock," by Joan Lindsay!? It's an Australian novel set in a girls' boarding school in the very early 1900's!. It's a riveting story about some schoolgirls who go missing during an excursion to a creepy rock formation!. It was made into a brilliantly successful film back in the 1970's - it's definitely an Aussie classic!.

I remember reading The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, by Avi, as a kid, and liking it!. It fits all your criteria except for England--it is a sea novel which starts in England, though--and has a pretty awesome protagonist in Charlotte!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are into Gothic you will like 'Uncle Silas' by Sheridan Le Fanu!. The heroine in an orphaned heiress who goes to stay with her nice uncle in his ramshackle mansion in England!.!.!.except that he's not so nice and he wants her money!.!.!.Written in 1869, this book is a real shocker!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
