I like long books!. The shortest book that I'd pick up in a bookstore is about 200 pages (small paperback size), which should be something like 60, 000 words!. That's about 75 pages on an A4, 10-point-font, single-spaced page!.

I prefer something 2 or 3 times longer than that, and up to 5 times longer if it's truly spectacular!. Most people I know would rather a 250-400 page book (that's more than 100 pages, less than 150 on an A4, 10-point-font, single-spaced page!.)

The appropriate length varies according to the genre you hope to publish in!. Children's books are usually smaller, fantasy/sci-fi books are usually medium or large, and so on!. If you edit your post and name the genre you hope to write about, I'll try to find the standard size for you!.

Above all, though, don't just add fill-words to increase the word length!. If the stories you write are better as short stories or novellas, keep them that way!.

**Edit: For a Fantasy book with Action and Sci-Fi elements, I'd recommend trying to keep it around the 300 page mark or a little over (that's 110 pages in Microsoft Word)!. A lot of older books in that genre are larger, but when trying to tempt readers as an unknown author, it'd be a shame to scare them off with an encyclopaedia-sized novel!. If it were any other genre I'd suggest you start with 200 pages, but most of the Fantasy readers I know prefer a slightly longer story!.

If you finish the book and it's only half that size, don't worry! Some of my favourite books are very brief!. Usually with those, the author has packed a lot of content and character development into those few pages, not wasting any space!. A story can be profoundly memorable regardless of length!.

Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Completely depends on your genre!. For example its common for a Fantasy/sci-fi novel to range up to 750 printed pages!. If its a history book again common to be over 1000 printed pages!. If its more of a mystery you looking anywhere between 180-400 printed pages!.

First my I would tell you you really need to switch to 12 point font!. Because with 12 point font it's easier to calculate how it will work once printed!. The basic rule is that 1 page written at 12 point font in word will = 2 printed pages!.

A good basic length for a book in any genre is 300 printed pages (or 150 word pages at 12 point font!.) this works on a give and take of about 50 printed pages (or 25 word pages)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Base it on words!. That's how the publishers do it, or so I've heard!. A page should contain 250 words, 25 lines, double spaced, font size: 12, font style: courier new!.

I think an average novel should have 50,000 to 80,000 words!.
