Many publishers however, do not go for authors straightway, but place intermediaries called "agents" in between!. The writers submit their manuscripts to agents and the agents then sell the manuscripts to a publishers!. A publisher earns from the sale of books!. Its not for non sense that they are so strict as to what books they publish!. What happens when the book is published it is the publishers duty to sell it!. The more copies he sells the more money he makes!. On that he pays the writer some amount of royalty because books are actually a writer's intellectual property!. SO writer's actually levy a kind of charge on publishers for selling their produce and earning therefrom!. Nowadays, as a later trend, subcontracting is prevelent!. If a publisher feels he cannot handle all the marketing and distribution netwroks himself he may employ other companies who specialise in such work!. SO basically, as a publisher you should take care what are you printing and offering to sell!. That will help you to earn returns and eventually break-even!.
