Question: Which books did you study at school for English Lit!?
Did you like them!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I loved English and went on to study it for another nine years after A-level!

A-level:
Great Expectations (made me very, very worried about Dickens' mental health because the picture of human sexual relationships it paints is not at all healthy!. It's interesting and well-written, but I didn't like several of the characters you're supposed to admire, such as Joe Gargery!. I much prefer Bleak House)!.
Hamlet!. Amazing, one of my favourites!.
William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience!. Another one of my favourites!.
Tenessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire!. Very moving!.
Pride and Prejudice!. Loved it!
Women's war poetry anthology called Scars Upon My Heart (variable quality, some very moving, some I wasn't impressed by)
Dr Faustus!. I didn't like it at the time, but I can appreciate it now!.

GCSE:
To Kill a Mockingbird!. Loved it!.
Boys from the Blackstuff (TV scripts)!. Fantastic! I only saw two ot the films while studying these texts, but recently watched all of them on DVD!. Very intelligent and powerful criticism of society in 1982!.

Pre-GCSE at comprehensive (can't remember all of them, there were lots):

The Incredible Journey (meh!)
Of Mice and Men (very moving)
Island of the Blue Dolphins (interesting, liked it)
Romeo and Juliet (I have to admit to finding this slightly soppy, although the language is beautiful!. I love Shakespeare, but this is not my favourite)

GCSE

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - Muriel Spark
Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare
Death of a Salesman - Arthur Miller

Can't actually remember any more!

A-Level
Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
Sons and Lovers - D!.H!. Lawrence
Anthony and Cleopatra - Shakespeare!.

I also remember studying the typical school classics such as Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird!.

I have been very lucky in that I loved all of the texts we studied and went on to do an English degree as a result!.

The ones that stayed with me the most were probably Wuthering Heights and The Handmaid's Tale!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

We studied 'Silas Marner' by George Eliott & I know it's a classic and everything but I hated it, it so boring and moralistic!. The year before us got to study 'Wuthering Heights' and I really wished we could have done 'Wuthering Heights' instead - that really is classic literature at its best!
We studied 'Othello' too which was excellent, but I would have preferred 'Macbeth' - one of my favourites by Shakespeare!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

An Ispector Calls we did and i loved the story, i really loved it and its the sort of thing i would have read in my own time!.
We did Shakespeare!.
We did Atonement
We did Jane Eyre as an author
We did Beloved the most
I liked most of them, in fact i liked all of them a bit but i wasnt so good at learning about Shakespeare!. My favourite was an Inspector Calls though!.

Edit: We did Far from the Madding Crowd as well and i lived it, it remains one of my favourites till this day!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since I am not from an english speaking country there really was no such subject as English Lit!. But we read A winter's tale and for the rest you were free to chose from a list of books!. I think I read the darling buds of may and the loved one and 1984 and stuff like that!. but it's a long time ago!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy which is good but not as good as Tess of the D'Urbervilles!.

Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, which is good but I'd rather see it performed as a play than trawl through the text for themes and meanings and all that "What Shakespeare was trying to say" stuff!.

Animal Farm by George Orwell!. I thought it was pretty silly at the time but like it a bit better now I know more about the events it allegorises!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When I did my 'O' levels in 1978, I read "1984" and "Cider with Rosie"!. Both were excellent books for hormone raging teenagers!. I liked both of these books and have re-read them since school!.

We also read "Twelfth Night", which we saw performed by the RSC and it changed my perception of Shakespear as it was really funny and rude (always good for maintaining the attention of 15/16-year olds)!. I love watching Shakespear plays now!.

Edit, I almost forgot, we also did "The Mayor of Casterbridge"!.!.!. not so interesting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

We read a lot of Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Julius Cesear

We also read:
The Catcher in the Rye
Wuthering Heights
A Streetcar Named Desire
The Great Gatsby
The Scarlet Letter
1984
To Kill a Mockingbird
Beuwolf

and probably more that I can't remember now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
