It's WWII!. In the book their father is fighting the Nazis!.
If you're wanting to read more, you're in luck!. There are tons of books, particularly in the young adult sections but also across the board, about that era--starting with WWI and ending at the end of the second!. There's a pretty extensive list in the sources link below!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was World War II!. A lot of children from cities were evacuated to the country at the beginning of the war, in the expectation of bombing!. However, when the bombs didn't come, a lot of them went home again!. it was a very random process, they would just take children to the village hall and people would come in and pick them!. Some evacuee children ended up in households where they were happy, some were less happy!. Upper and middle-class children would often be away at boarding school in any case, in which case the whole school would often be evacuated, if it wasn't already in the country!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

According to Wikipedia, the book was written in 1950 and set in about 1940, which would indeed make it World War II!. (They did have a whole article and I found a second one about the evacuation of children!.)

Hope it helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
