This must be the shipwreck!.!.!.

"America!. Cutter!. Captain WilliamThompson!. Ran on to a reef near Prince of Wales Island, 1844!. A sixteen year old Scots girl, Barbara Thompson, recently married to the captain, was rescued by aborigines and lived with them until 16 October 1849, when she made contact with a water party from HMS Rattlesnake and taken aboard!. She recovered fully from her deprivations, later married, and died in 1912, aged eighty-four"

If you go to the first link below, you will find reference letters beside the shipwreck report (the Thompson one is about the 5th entry down), each set relates to a book which mentions the incident!. There are 5 associated with the entry!.

There's one book which I've found linked to her experiences, but I'm not sure it's the one you're after: Islanders and Aborigines at Cape York, by Moore, David R!. !.!.!."an ethnographic reconstruction based on the 1848-1850 "Rattlesnake' journals of O!. W!. Brierly and information he obtained from Barbara Thompson"

This one may have her story, but it is a collection, rather than focusing her her specifically!.!.!. The Explorers: Stories of Discovery and Adventure from the Australian Frontier (Paperback) edited by Tim Flannery

If you google: barbara thompson 1844 torres; then you will find other references, and may come across the book you are after!. also search on 'Thomson' rather than 'Thompson' as both variants are used!.

You'll definitely find her story in amongst the 'Voyage of the Rattlesnake', see Chapter 1!.8 (free, online, below)Www@QuestionHome@Com

After a lot of googleing it is called Wildflower!.!.!.although I haven't found where to get it yet!.

Her exploits are referred to in other books of famous shipwrecks but couldn't find anywhere where the book could be bought!.!.shame, you have got me interested now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A book was written at the time by O (Oswald) S Brierly!. Good luck with the search!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
