Two words!. Terry Pratchett!. It's Comic Fantasy, but written from a good knowledge of History and the kind of scholarship only the most eccentric Brits can manage!.

Most importantly, his stuff is utterly hilarious and so engrossing that it's common to read a 300 page novel in a single sitting!.

Start with "Going Postal!." or "The Truth!." They're funnier if you know the continuing characters, but You don't have to have read the others to love them!. They, along with "Moving Pictures," are good starting points because Pratchett's style and world were already fully developed when they were written!.

Best of all, Pratchett's novels are all rereadable, because nobody gets all the jokes the first time through!.

The movie based on Pratchett's Christmas Story, "Hogfather" is also available at most major video outlets!.

also worth a look are Harry Turtledove's alternate history novel "Guns of the South" and Eric Flint's "1632," which is set during the Thirty Year's War, and is pretty accurate historically, up until a townfull of time displaced West Virginians change all that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For years I worked at Borders and we always had a staff pick section!. None of the Richard and Judy books were ever in the staff pick section! Two in particular that I remember (and they were my choice! Sorry!) were Explaining Death to the Dog by Susan Perabo, and Happenstance by Carol Shields!. They sold by the bucketload because of personal recommendation!. To be very big headed you need booksellers (dedicated ones) to recommend really good reads!. A good historical novel would be something by Philippa Gregory!. Classy thrillers by P D James!. Biographies by Antonia Fraser!. (So many biographies published now about people half my age, badly written, and dull)!. Choose carefully!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Really quite touching!.!.!. Doesn't matter if you're not a 'petrolhead' or don't watch his programmes it's still a good read!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
