Hi,

Both the shutter speed and the aperture control the amount of light that falls on the unexposed film or in a digital camera on the light sensitive plate!.

In simple terms the aperture sets the depth of field or the amount of the subject being photographed that is in focus!. The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth (focus) of field!.

The shutter speed will stop or freeze the action (a fast shutter speed) or by using a slow shutter speed, then you create the impression of movement (blurring)!.

Aperture refers to how open the iris is in the lens!. So the bigger open the iris, the more light gets into the camera!. This number is represented as f/2!.8 f/4, f/16, etc!. The smaller the number, the more open your iris is, the more light gets into the camera!.

The shutter speed refers to how long the shutter stays open when you take the picture!. For example, a shutter of 1/10 (though it may show up on your camera as simply 10) will keep the shutter open for one tenth of a second!. A shutter of 30 seconds will keep the shutter open for 30 seconds, which also means, of course, that any movement in the frame during this time will show up as a big blur!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No you haven't been studying photography or you would know what these are!.

They are both pretty obvious if you think about it!.
Shutter speed - speed at which the shutter opens and closes
Aperture - the aperture is the "hole" which allows light through the lens!.

Not very passionate about it if you don't know the basics after 3 years though are you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Then you aren't a photographer!. You're just someone with a camera!. There's a big difference!.

Photographers, film or digital, consider shutter speed, aperture (yes that's how you spell it) and ISO every time they start a shoot!.

Is it too late for you to transfer to Hair and Beauty!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

You have some good and accurate answers above, so I won't repeat the information!.

If you have been studying photography fro three years, what have you learned!? Composition!? Manipulation!? How to point and shoot and hope for the best, knowing that you can always fix it in Photoshop!?

I'm just wondering how you could be three years into this and not know!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

So, apparently it is your passion, you've been studying it for 3 years in college, extremely interested and all the rest, oh how unfortunate you have forgotten the very basics!.
Dig out the notes, google the terms, learn!.
Sorry!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

And in your other question you said you are a good photographer and want to become a pro!. mmmmm Makes me think!. Your words below!.
"I'm 18, living in England in my final couple of months of A-level photography i know i have the potential to go into a good career of photography its my passion!"

I think you best stay on at college for an extra few years if you are asking this question!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
