If you are having trouble getting your proportions correct, I think it might help!. People often get distracted by a person's outline and surface features!. Using the mannequin helps to remind the artist that underneath there are straight bones and legs are longer than they seem :)

Some figure drawing techniques (mannequin or real life):

-Start with the spine of who you are drawing, draw a light line where it would be
-Next lightly draw a straight line to show the angle of the shoulders, then do the same for the hips
-Use elongated ovals to show where each bone will be for the legs, then the arms
-Now start shaping your torso/shoulders
-Lastly an oval for the head

-Now you can start to darken in the details

My advice is to start with the first two steps (spine/shoulders/hips) and do it over and over with different positions until it comes naturally!. Slowly add another step and once that becomes natural, add another one!.!.!.!. and so on!.!.!.

Good luck, have fun, waste lots of paper!.
You have to draw A LOT before you start getting good :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. Provided you don't just do it and nothing else!. Copy (don't trace) drawings, and copy photographs remembering that the range of values in any picture (including digital) truncates the range of values by about ten per cent, so try to make the darker parts darker and the lighter parts lighter and guess or exaggerate any details you know are there but have a hard time seeing!.!. Generally, though, you will find you get your best results if you work from large masses to smaller, so when you are working from a mannequin you are working on the large masses, and the small masses, nose and such, are things it is easier to invent on the figure once you have the torso, limbs etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
