Just do it :)

i mean who cares if people think your crazy!.
you only live once!.
would you rather look back and say "oh yeah i took this city street picture by myself"

or "I know i shoulda just taken the picture"

I can only speak for the UK here, but there is no right of privacy in a public place so you have every right to take pictures!. Using the pictures commercially is different!. If I think I may use the picture I get them to sign a model release form!.

I find the opposite to you, using a camera can break down barriers!. Most people are happy you find them interesting enough to photograph, so smile a lot, chat a lot and engage with them!. If I don't want the 'posed' look I take candid pictures before I talk to them, then take a few more!. I always send them a copy if they ask, I've even got work this way!.

I know this interaction doesn't come naturally to some people, it didn't with me when I was young, but I find it the best part, just remember you are doing nothing wrong and, in the UK at least, the Law is on your side!. It gets easier the older you get!. Once you get to my age you've experienced the bad encounters, the good encounters and the absolutely great encounters!.

Your body language and demeanor, if positive and upbeat, will overcome most any antagonism, at least that's what I've found!. Not that I've encountered much!.

I've learnt this one thing after all these years as an amature snapper - that is, if you give a crap about what others may or may not think about you and you taking pics in public, you would then end up with zero photographs!.
Who cares what others think!? Just get on with your business, be aware of the surroundings, but keep in mind others have better things to worry about and there is little point in being self-conscious!. After a while you'll get used to it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I get like this too, just relax, your doing your job, just like they have to do theirs!. If you feel more comfortable, bring a friend along, they could help you with tripods and stuff anyway!. If you do this for the first few times you'll be fine!. I was nervous and then I saw other photographers climbing up on statues and window sills to get their shot!. Its completely normal!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

you should wear a name tag that says your name on it and professional photographer (even if ur not professional) that way people know that ur not a stalker!. and u might wanna have the name tag laminated and professionally made or something cuz if u just make it at home people will start to wonder!.

Ignore them! Point the camera and take the picture!

If I worried about that every time I took one I would never get any work done!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
