Question: Las meninas painting!?
Does anyone know Diego Velazquez's source of inspiration for Las meninas or why he did it!? and could you provide the source if possible!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Painting was considered more of a "craft" in the seventeenth century!.

Diego Velazquez (I'm sure) considered himself a craftsman!.

It wasn't until the "Romantic" movement in the nineteenth century that artists started to do a lot of work purely out of their own inspiration!.

I think the "inspiration" for Las Meninas came from the daily activities of the court that Velazquez observed while he painted his pictures there!.

This painting is a masterly piece of compositon, I have gotten a lot of "inspiration" from it

He wasn't inspired!. What do you mean!? Artists (right up to the 19th century) worked to commission!. Their client or patron asked them to do something, and they worked for money!. Velazquez would not have understood your question!. He earned a living from painting, as simple as that!. The patron would have been, in this instance, the King!. It was really people like the Pre-Raphaelites and the Impressionists, who got together to make art, and then looked for people to buy their work!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
