That is an absolutely HUGE question, but a good one!. This is as simply as I can put it, but you'll need to do some good reading!. Postmodernism is basically the rejection of Modernist ideals, and those were, for example, the pursuit for truth and beauty or 'metanarratives' (a sort of universal idea), elitism, an affinity with bourgeois culture, a distaste for 'folk' culture, i!.e popular or 'mass' culture to name a few!. Postmodernism opened the gates for a lot of critical theory - a great introduction to this is 'Introducing Critical Theory' - http://www!.amazon!.com/Introducing-Critic!.!.!. - a book I recommend anyone interested in visual arts!.

Here's a few writers concerned with postmodernism who might be helpful, though they are quite complex -
Hal Foster, particularly 'Return of The Real',
Fredric Jameson - 'Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism'
Clement Greenberg - 'Avant Garde and Kitsch' (He was very much on the Modernist side, but it highlights some important aspects of Modernist thinking which Postmodernism rejected)
Michael Foucault - can't think of a particular book off hand but he's one to research!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They are wrong terms to describe art!. The best terms are the art of the first half of the 20th century and the art of the second half of the 20th century!.
In different time artists use different techniques and knowledge!. That is the only difference!. This difference makes least sense in art!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
