Question: Can I use this flash with the camera I have!?
I just bought a DSLR- the Canon Rebel XTI!. I am trying out a Canon Speedlite 540EZ flash with it- I downloaded and printed the manuel from Canon!. It doest flash when I put it in full auto-or any other setting!. I know this flash was for a film camera, am I doing something wrong- or is it that I need a different flash!? It is such a steal at $90-(I am buying it from a friend- if it works) Thank you!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Straight from a Canon rep:

"Thank you for contacting Canon product support!.

"When an EZ series Speedlite set in the TTL or ATTL autoflash mode is mounted on the EOS Digital Rebel, the flash will not fire!. The manual flash mode must be used (with Speedlites having a manual mode)!. You must set the camera's shutter speed to 1/200 second (maximum flash synchro shutter speed) or slower, and set the aperture to a value appropriate to the flash's guide number and the distance to the subject!.

"You are recommended to set the white balance to Flash to shoot!.

"For best results, the EOS Digital Rebel should be used with EX series Speedlite flashes!.

"Thank you for choosing Canon!.

"Sincerely,

I found a chart that tells the compatibility with canon cameras!. It is a little fuzzy, but it may help!.

The 540EZ is a very good flash!. Since it is not dedicated, though, you will need to adjust the manual power settings when you shoot!. It is not too big a deal, but it is time consuming if you go from taking a shot of someone 6 feet away and then another one at someone 15 feet away!.
