It really depends on your skill level- but I would get a picture of you and her together and put it on your computer!. This way, you are able to draw the photo in a rouch sketch and later when doing details of the face, etc!.!.!. you can enlarge the photo on yoru screen- it can help you get a better idea of how something looks when you see it closer up!.
The best advice I can give you for drawing the figures is to not draw things the way you think they look!. For example, many people draw an eye like a football with a circle in it!. This is not really how most peoples' eyes look!.!.!.!. in fact, the pupil rarely ever can be seen entirely- they are like circles but with top and/or bottom "cut off" by skin/eye lid!. The "football shape" also is sort of almond shaped or shaped like a football but it is not one line that goes and does this- it is a series of shadows (to make an eye socket) and hilights that make it look the way it does!.
also, to add life to your figures!.!.!. try to avoid strong, bold contour lines for the most part!. When you look at someone's nose- for example- you do not see a line but you see different shadows that eventually make that nose shape!.
What helped me to draw (especially figures) is using pencil REALLY lightly to get the sketch down and then you can go back using different shades with blending sticks/stumps!. (!.!.!. get yourself a set of belnding sticks and drawing pencils at a craft/hobby/art store!. They will give you a variety of dark/light tones through the hardness/softness of the graphite!.) Anyway, by using these blending stumps, you as the artist can achieve great changes in shades (dark blacks for shadows, light grays, white of paper stand for hi lights of object)!. This will help you to avoid making the outline of object!. By not making the outlines of things, your work will look emuch more realistic!. You can make shapes of shadows and lights to make the actual object for you rather than draw the outside lines of the objects!. also, develop the background of your work- especially if it is of something you and your mom are doing together OR you can just do some shading in different areas to make different forms- you don't have to make it look like a certain thing!. Just don't leave it stark white! It makes it seem more real when you put your figures in some sort of shading or setting!.
also, think of getting a piece of paper that is a typical size for frames you can buy at any store (like 8 by 10 or 11 by 14, etc!.) because custom framing is really expensive for a high school gal!. You could probably find an affordable frame in one of these common photo or poster sizes to put it in once it is complete- that would really make it look nice!
Good luck- I know your mom will love the portrait no matter what, but hopefully these tips will help you be very proud of it too!Www@QuestionHome@Com
