It hasn't got a specific name and it's a rule of thumb rather than a rigid rule!. It applies most effectively to 35mm film cameras or 35 mm full-frame format dSLR sensors!. Generally speaking, it is safe to shoot hand-held photographs without getting noticeable camera movement provided that the shutter speed in fractions of a second is at least as fast as the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens, in millimetres!. So: 28mm: 1/30th; 50mm: 1/60th; 200mm: 1/250th and so on!. The reason is simply that the longer the focal length of the lens, the greater the magnification!. The greater the magnification, the greater the effect of any camera movement relative to the subject!. As I said this is not an inflexible rule: it's a guide!. The steadiness of your hands will vary according to how nervous you are, whether you've just run 50 yards to get to the right camera position, whether you've got a hangover and a million other things!. Works for me, though, most of the time anyway!. but I would always use a tripod or a beanbag for lens lengths of more than 200mm!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
