Question: Canon 5d Mark II OR 70-200mm f/2!.8L - Get Which First!?
Currently using a Rebel XTi which I have outgrown!. For X-mas I have the choice of either the new 5D OR the L series lens!. I know a good piece of glass is all important but it seems stupid to not get, what looks like an amazing, new camera!. Need serious answers please!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

It really depends on what you already have aside from the body!. If you only have the kit lens or a majority of EF-S lenses, then you either won't have any lenses that work with the 5D mk!. II, or very few!.

However, if you have a decent selection of EF lenses already, go ahead and get that 5D mk!. II!. But keep in mind, I was adamant about upgrading to a 5D mk!. II from a 400D (Or XTI, as it's marketed in the States) before I snapped out of the "need better camera" frenzy that grips people (And never leaves some) and bought myself a nice L lens!.!.!. I can tell you that any percieved lack of quality in your photographs is either because of your skill (I'm not impuning your photography skills, I'm just saying) or the lens (The kit lens is kinda mushy, ya know!?)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would go for the L series lens especially since the xti still works!.

I do want to point out that I recently attended a camera sponsored event and got to hold and snap a photo with the 5d Mark II!. I also got to preview a movie that was taken with it's video mode (which I personally find useless)!.!. It was a great camera!.!.!. but a camera is just a box capturing light, it's whose behind it that makes a great photo and the glass is where it is at!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The XTI has a APS C sensor that has a crop fact of 1!.6!. This means that a 70-200 zoom fitted on on XTI would actually be 112-300 zoom!. The Canon 5D Mark II (or older 5D) are full frame cameras and lenses of XTIs will not work!.

also If you are going in for a 5D you will need more than one lens!. If you are happy with just one all purpose lens then you are not ready for 5D!.

Either you shift over to a new 5D and a new lens range or you stick to XTI and add on a few more lenses after taking into consideration the crop rate of 1!.6!.

Do note that any S series canon lens that you might have will not fit in with 5d!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Canon 5D Mark II and buy yourself a Canon 50mm F/1!.8

(Or sell the Mark II and get your 70-800 F/2!.8 AND the regular Canon 5D!.)

(The most expensive thing I ever got was a battery powered RC car when I was growing up!. $99)Www@QuestionHome@Com

When you have a choice, always get the good glass first!. It will outlast you through many, many camera bodies!. And to be honest, you'll be surprised at the increased quality image when you stick that bad boy even on the Rebel!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm somewhat surprised that you have "outgrown" the XTi!. I know why the new 5d is a heck of a camera, but what don't you think you can do with an XTi that you can do with a 5d (please don't say video)!.

One fact omitted--if you chose the Mark II--all you will have is a camera without a lens because your Rebel kit lens will not work with it!.

And there is really no point of getting anything but a good lens for it!.
