Question: Digital SLR - ISO 800 with a flash!?
Would I need like a super fast shutter speed in order to avoid the picture being washed out!?

This is what a pro photographer told me he was using the other day in a dark church like hall!. But wouldnt the faces of the people be all white (washed out)!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think you misunderstood him!. if you use the light meter in the camera and a ttl flash, you should not get washed out images!.

There are a few DSLR's that can sync at shutter speeds higher than 1/250!. The technique is that once the shutter is open, the sensor shuts off long before the shutter closes!.

The Nikon D1, D1x, D1h and D70 can sync up to 1/2000th second!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are many ways of using flash and I can think of several ways to use flash in combination with a high ISO!. I depends on the physical environment!. For instance, if you have a powerful enough flash, bouncing it does two things for you at high ISO's!.

1!. Like all bounce, it gives softer shadows and better modelling!.
2!. It evens out the light fall off and you have a deeper light range you can shoot in!. This works out very nicely with off camera flash that can function TTL wirelessly!. Canon and Nikon flashes can both do that and flashes like Metz and some others can also do that wirelessly!.

For this type of shooting, upping the ISO is directly equivalent to having a more powerful flash!. With a decent camera like the Canon XTi and Nikon's equivalent, the noise at ISO 800 is quite acceptable and easily corrected for!. Further up the scale, then ranges like 1600 and 3200 become useful and you can still produce a good end product!.

I have no idea why a 'super fast' shutter speed would matter in this situation!. At least, I can't think of a rational one!. Maybe I'm just tired!.

your onto something:

iso800 and flash is a combo i would never use

it depends on the apperture they used - gn/fstop=distance

if shooting just the couple then it proberly worked, if shooting the whole scence the flash drop off would be terrible, those close to the flash would have washed out faces, those in the right distance for the equation would be ok, those far away would be under exposed

ask to see the pictures - if they took hundreds and only have a handful to show then you have the answer

With digital and a OEM flash I bet you could get away with it!.

I've never done it myself except with the built-in flash on my D50 and it worked!. If you are shooting FF then noise will be even less of an issue!. Certainly experiment first!. Don't try it at the wedding for the first time!.

Watch the histogram and vary the flash EV output if it seems too hot!. Do not overexpose!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

at iso 800 the noise would be horrendous, ok if your doing a sarah moon!.!. but i suspect not for a wedding!.

and any fim speed which is corectly matched to your shutter speed and flash aperture, wont give you washed out whites!.!.!.unless your overexposing it!.!.!. deliberatley!.!.!. (the meter says F8, and you use F4!.)

some folks use weird combo's, i use F22, at X many seconds, and fire a slow shutter flash!.!.!. at 50asa/isoWww@QuestionHome@Com
