You have what you have but you can still get some good stuff if you think while you're shooting!. As well as the advice from the other respondents, something they haven't mentioned is, because you can't follow the action with a long lens, wait until the action comes to you!.
You can help by being near the sideline and getting up close to the goal when you see the action move in that direction!. If the action appears a bit one sided then get near the goal under attack and be ready!.
If the weather stays pretty constant, and if your camera allows it, you can use manually-set aperture at maximum and the fastest shutter speed you can get away with, so you get consistent results!. Remember that at the top of a jump the players are stationary for a fraction of a second; a mid-air challenge looks great if you pick your moment!.
Obviously, stay out of the way of the officials, don't put yourself in danger and, most importantly, enjoy yourself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well it will have to do won't it!.
So you need to think about how to get the best out of it!.
If you want to freeze the action then you'll need a fast shutter speed!. Set the camera to Tv mode!. Aim for 1/500!. If the weather is good and bright then this shouldn't be too difficult!.
Change the autofocus to use the centre AF point only as it is the most accurate and should ensure that the focusing is better more often!.
You could try to use AI Focus or AI Servo modes for focusing!. These systems allow the camera to refocus on moving objects more quickly but can be a bit unreliable, especially if using just the one focus point!.
Try and keep the ball in the shots you take as it gives the action in the photo some perspective!. Keep your eye on the action and try to anticipate the game to get the best shots!.
You'll have plenty of time so try a few different things!. Use the time as a learning excercise!. It's all good practice!.
Have fun!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Given that you have one tool in your kit, it's the best one you have!. If you are able to be on the sidelines, you might make out okay with your lens at the 55mm end anyhow!. If you had something like 150-200mm on your camera, you might have trouble following the action anyway!. You have to learn to track with the action and with a really long lens, you might find that the players keep running out of your field of view!. Just run what you brung and have a good time!. "It's a learning experience!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

You've got a 450D but no lens!?
You can still use the lens, of course, but you will most likely be somewhat unhappy with the results!. The kit lens is slow and short, and sports lenses need to be long and fast!.
Basically, you'll just have to shoot then crop, a lot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Unfortunately the kit lens, (and it's a fine, usable lens), is not suited for this task!. You'll be physically too far away to get a "tight" shot!.

The only thing I can see if you will need to crop the photo(s)--but you may not be happy with the results!.
