Question: In Photoshop, how do I lighten a black peice of cloth yet still maintain the shadows!?
I'm not new to photoshop, but I'm not a pro either!. I have a job here where a model has a gray jacket w/ a black skirt!. The client has asked that I make the skirt the same color as the jacket!. If I simply lighten, or try a gray layer w/ different types of blends, or replace color, etc!. I lose my shadows in the skirt and it looks bad!. How do I do this to the best effect!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

You may have to do them manually by lassoing areas and lightening them less/more than others because if the skirt if very black then it may have no discernible shadows!. But try Image>Adjustments>Levels first and try other options like Image>Adjustements>Shadow/Highlights!. If you post the image I can have a quick go and make FAR better suggestions!. It all depends on the image I'm afraid!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mask out everything but the skirt you want to change!.

Then, select the color from the jacket with the eyedropper tool!.

Click on the brush tool, and then, from the brush menu, select "Hue!."

This will allow you to replace the original color with the new color and maintain all the value components of the shadows!.

Since you have the rest of the image masked off, you can do the entire skirt in huge, massive brush strokes, or, even as a single operation "Fill!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

well i don't know what version you have, i have 2!.0 (yes i know, very old) but on mine if u go to enhance!. adjust color!. color variations!. there is a thing on there that u can pick for lighting a picture!. the shadows are still there, but they do get lighter!. hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
