You can scan the image in and use photoshop to restore it!. If you hire a professional to do the work, you can look at paying $50 or more per image!. The results can be worth it, though!.

Here is a sample image I was given to restore:

You can click on "full size" at the top left to see greater detail!.

If you are interested, I know several students who are studying photo restoration techniques who would love to have a chance to practice on a torn image!. If you are interested in having them work on it, e-mail me through my profile!.

also, I don't recommend taping the image prior to scanning!. I find it easier to layer the edges of the torn pieces when they are scanned with a little space between them!. Just scan at a high resolution, against a white background!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

if you know how to use photoshop, you can scan in the image and all it's pieces!. (it might be a good idea to piece the puzzle together, and tape the back before you scan it!.) there are many companies that specialize in photoshopping ripped, torn or damaged images!. (i've done this myself with some really old family photos!.)

it's not easy to explain in words, but pretty much it can take several hours, especially with a photo that is torn into 9 pieces, and it's a matter of using the photoshop tools to "heal" the torn areas by cloning nearby similar areas!.

if you google "photograph restoration" there are tons of links!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Fixing with tape is not necessarily a stupid answer!.
In fact, you might just have to start with that (of course the tape goes on the BACK !!!)!. Do the very best job you can, then scan it at a very high resolution and find someone who knows their way around photoshop to try and repair the rest of the damage!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You could use 3M photo adhesive and carefully glue it together like a puzzle onto photo mount cardboard!.

Then scan your photograph into a very hi-res file, hide rips digitally and reprint on photographic paper at a local lab or MPIX!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

fix it together as best you can then scan it into the PC!. Once there there are loads of progs you can google and download what will tidy it up!. Then Reprint it using a High quality photography paper!. Or if you put it onto a memory card and take it into a photo shop they will do the biz!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is probably some sort of special adhesive you can get!. Try a photography shop/pharmacist!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
