The Nikon D40 is a great camera, and Nikon makes great glass to go in front of it!. (This from a Pentax user!.) If you wanna switch the numbers and letters around, the Canon 40D is also a great camera, but pricier than the Nikon (and for a reason)!.

You should be able to pick up the Nikon D40 in a kit with a couple of lenses for under $1000!.

One advantage of digital is that while the quality is not as good as film, it's not all that noticeably worse than film!. And you can make a lot more mistakes a lot cheaper while you're learning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You'll need a camera that can be used in a full manual mode!. Other than that you really should just pick the system you enjoy the most!. Go to a decent camera shop and handle each camera in your price range!. Many stores have a rental program that will include a partial refund on the rental price if you buy!. Take advantage of it and try out a few different brands!. All of the recent cameras from the major camera manufactures can produce excellent images so it is entirely personal preference!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd suggest getting a Canon!. I've used Canon and Nikons throughout my photography career and in my experience find Canon to be better!. You can view my photos here!. http://www!.myspace!.com/badfish29

Add me as a friend if you would like!.
