A "pinhole" camera is as basic as it gets and can be made by anyone!. Contrary to what another answerer posted it does not use a lens!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The very Basics:

The parts: Lens, Aperture, Shutter, Focal plane

The Lens focuses the light onto the focal plane!.
The Aperture is the hole through which the light passes between the Lens and the focal plane!. The size of this hole can vary in most cameras and is measured in units called F-stops!. The bigger the hole the more light hits the focal plane!.
The Shutter is the device that controls the length of time the exposure is made!. The longer the shutter is open the more light hits the focal plane!. Shutter speed is measured in units of fractions of a second!. so a shutter speed of 125 is 1/125 sec!.
The focal plane is the area where the focused, timed, exposusre falls and where the image is formed!. In film cameras this is a frame of light-sensitive film!. In digital cameras it is an imaging chip!.

At this point the workings of film and digital cameras diverge!.
In a film camera the captured image is latent (not visible) and the film must be developed to form the image!. Typically the image is a negative - reversing light and dark and colors!.

In digital cameras an onboard micro processor digitizes the captured image and stores it as a file on the camera memory card!.

Modern digitial Video works pretty much the same as digital still cameras, except it is taking the pictures at the rate of 30 times per second and the images are usually much smaller (lower resolution) than still images!.
