Question: Is it fair to say, raw are like negs, jpegs are like positives!?

I tend to think of RAW as negs!. Something that can be changed and printed over!.

JPEG is more like a print!. It is pretty much done!.

It's not fair to say anyhting in the sort!. RAW images are positives, it's just that the files contain way more data than you would mostly need or see but it obviously gives way more control in post-processing!. JPEGS are just compressed image files!.

But comparing RAW to negs and jpegs to positives does give an impression (even though not a very accurate one) of the use of the two image types!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Agreeing with a lot of people here especially "Mere_Mortal"!. Another thing though if you're using a website such as www!.flickr!.com and posting both film and digital pics and someone steals them you could never prove yourself the owner of regular JPEGS!. If you have the RAW you can prove yourself the rightful owner, just as you can with your negatives!. Because you can make a JPEG out of RAW but the person stealing your JPEG can't make a RAW out of that :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sort of, although they are both positive images!.

RAW files are processed externally to the camera !.!.!. using a photo program like Photoshop, so in a sense, they are like a transparency!.

JPEG files are processed in the camera, so in a sense they are more like an instant photo system !.!.!. like the old Polaroid system, although you still have to print themWww@QuestionHome@Com

No!.

The negative is a negative image, and is preserved on film!.

RAW files, jpegs, tiff and so on, are digital files!. Not much more than some 0's and 1's!.

But I must say, all digital images can be more compared to post-developed positive film!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
