Question: Oil Painting on unprimed canvas!?
Hey guys, I'm interested in doing a painting on unprimed canvas!. I'm aware that the canvas will eventually rot, and I was wondering if there was anything you could do to prevent this (besides priming the canvas, obviously)!.

If not, when will negative effects first be seen!? I mean, this isn't going to be a masterpiece or anything, it's more of an experiment!. It doesn't need to last 150+ years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I like to do mine without prime because in a few years it gives it a rustic look, but relax, as long as your oil isn't laid on top of drier oil it will come out even and last for quite a while!. After doing it though you should spray a light coat of finnish or something because it tends to still smear or chip off because of no backing to the canvas!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You will be long dead berfore the canvas rots!.
Painting on unprimed canvas is not uncommon!.
Priming just gives a smoother surface & a lighter background!.
& soak up a little more paint than a primed canvas !.
Not an issue
