Question: Become Book Design Artist!?

I was wondering how you could design a book cover for well, a book lol!. I have a lot of experience in Photoshop and art, and I have no idea how to get into that type of business, but I'd like to!. Becoming an Illustrator is a desired profession with a lot of competition!. I would advice you to go study "Illustration" at collage or Uni if you are serious!.

Most publishing companies have a library of artists, and the author or people publishing, will often choose the artist purely on the style they feel fit to book!. Normally a person will come in, and get handed a large book with several illustrations, and they will pick out the design they like, contact the designer and ask them to work on the book in question!.

If you know an author, you could of course convince them to tell their publisher they would rather use you!.

If you wish to just make it on your own, you could of-course make a website, and stick a selection of your most polished work on there, and your CV!. An online portfolio is always nice, and should show a selection of style and work!.

You could even get websites that does display "book" illustrations, to either show your work, or link you, but know that sometimes they will charge you!.

Most new Illustrators work for a company, who promote and sell your design to publishing companies and authors!. But they will charge you up to 40%!.

So you see, it isn't as straight forward as one would wish it to be!. There are many freelancers out there, much competition, and the challenge is always of course to be spotted and known!.
