Question: It dark, overcast and very rainy today!. Any good ideas for some inside still life photographs!?

Sure!. Try some long exposures - my favorite long exposure was of a pendulum clock in the dining room!. You could see the motion blur from the pendulum and actually count how far the second hand moved while I had the shutter open!. So maybe you could try some other pictures that show subtle movement!.

I actually like still lifes!. I love taking landscape photos, but there are just some times when you it's not a good day for taking pictures outside!. Usually, where I live in California, it's because it's too smoggy or hazy and I can't even see the mountains!. Or sometimes you just have bad weather, like in your case!. So still lifes indoors are another chance for you to be creative!. Try lowering the light and just using candles to light up your subjects!. Candle light gives a very warm color to pictures!. I know you use both film and digital!.!.!.so if you have a manual film camera available, load it with some low ISO color film and try to get some long exposure pictures!. Film tends to shift color with long exposures!.!.!.but it shifts more to the red side and I actually like it!. With incandescent lights and candles, it gives a very warm tone!. I took a picture of my mom's dog while he was sleeping on the couch!. I used my Argus C44 camera with Kodak Gold 200 film and of course no flash!. I did a 6 second exposure at f/8!. The film shifted color a little bit, but in this case it worked perfect!. It made a really warm toned picture (but without getting oversaturated), and it looked almost like a greeting card!.

So maybe you could play around with long exposures!. Run some water in a sink or bathtube and take a picture of the faucett!. Set up objects on a table and experiment with different lighting sources and angles!. Maybe you could also try some experiments with florescent lighting and motion!. Household AC current alternates at 60 hertz (60 cycles-per-second)!. A florescent lamp actually flickers at 120 times per second (once for each part of the AC cycle) because it's a gas-discharge tube and unlike an incandescent bulb it goes off instantly between cycles!. So if you use a digital camera, maybe there's a way to try some interesting experiments!.!.!.I've heard if you take a picture of a fan running under florescent lighting, you can get some really weird effects with either a very fast shutter speed or a long exposure!. (Maybe the shutter will fire between the AC cycles!?) also, digital cameras can pick up infrared light (and they might also be sensitive to other wavelengths that we can't see)!. Get a tv remote and point it at the camera and press any of the buttons!.!.!.you'll notice that a light from the infrared LED will actually show up on the camera's LCD preview screen and when you take the picture!. So use your imagination!.!.!.experiment with making your own infrared night vision scope!

So there are some ideas!. Use a manual film camera and try some long exposures with candle light and incandescent lighting!. Try different light sources and angles!. Try to get long exposures that show subtle motion, like a clock!. Or maybe long exposures of running water!. If you want to use a digital camera, try experiments with different kind of lighting, like florescent and infrared light!.
