The question is not really answerable (academically or otherwise) as it assumes there is an absolute standard against which art can be judged or even compared!. You cannot compare the work of Michelangelo, Picasso, Hokusai, Duchamp, Mondrian, Turner, Velazquez, Carl Andre (or just about any artist I could mention) as they are all trying to do different things!. It is a bit like asking what is the best direction - it all depends where you are and where you are trying to go!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From an academic point of view it's probably got to be either Michelangelo or Leonardo Da Vinci who were clearly both light years of their time both technically and artistically!.

Its also arguable Rembrandt, Holbien and Rubens have contributed more to what we have learned in historical terms from art!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Caravaggio!. (Michelangelo Merisi de Caravaggio), 1573-1610!. Go and see- The supper at Emmaus which he painted in 1600-01!. and hangs in the National Gallery in London!. Always takes my breath away!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
