Most SLR digital cameras with 8 megapixil capability will do what you want!. A used Canon Digital Rebel with two lenses - one about 28-55 mm and one about 70-300 mm - will give you thr range to get some wildlife!. Pay between $400 and $600 for a good used one!.

I use a Leica V-Lux1 w/a 28-420 mm fixed lens to cover the above range with 10 megapixils!. $849 new!.

I'm a photo club secretary located in Maine!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is nearly impossible to answer without a price range, but here goes!. I'm going to refer to Canon models since that's what I'm familiar with!. You can find comparable items from Nikon or other brands!.
If you want a good camera at a very reasonable price, look at the Canon S5 IS or the new SX10 IS!. Though they are technically P&S, they have a lot of creative abilities from total manual and up!.
If you're looking for a DSLR to start, check out the Rebel series with the latest and greatest being the XSi!. This camera comes with and 18-55mm, stabilized kit lens which may not be quite long enough for wildlife, but it's a good starter lens!.
The main thing is to decide how much you're willing to spend and add 10% for memory cards, batteries, cases, etc!. Then go to a camera shop and handle all of the cameras in the range you're looking for!. Handle them and see how well the controls fit in your hands!. Don't worry about what they all do, just how well you can reach them!. Then go back and research which one fits your needs most!. Good luck on figuring it out!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well Emily, if you are in class for film BW photography, why are you wanting to do this!? It would be like taking piano lessons and early on deciding you want your own grand piano and start writing your own songs!. You need to stick with your class and progress as planned, then start getting into other mediums!.

But just to answer your question, the Nikon D40 has become sort of the "go to" camera for those just beginning in digital and yet want a good product!. The camera and kit lens can be bought for under $500!.

Serious picture taking comes from attitude not from the camera you use!.

Just about any currently manufactured brand name point & shoot digital camera is capable of producing technically great images!. It's up to you to make 'em "serious"!.

When you want to step up to wildlife, perhaps one of the most difficult fields of photography, you are going to want to consider a FF camera and great telephoto glass!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A Nikon D40 is nice if you can swing the $450 or so dollars for the body and a 16-48 mm lens!. The lenses are interchangeable so different lenses can be added to the camera as time and need requires!.Or look at some of the upper end Cannons!. Remember what makes a good photograph great is what one sees in his or her eye and not so much the camera!. I have seen some of the best photos I've ever seen that were taken with a $7!.00 disposable camera and a great "Eye"
