If you're a student you're allowed to use it for free, and stock photo sites don't know or care if you copy and paste their available images!

Student rights overthrowing copyright is amazing - you can use images and videos and songs and everything without having to give ANYONE credit! (cherish it, because you'll miss it when you're done)

BUT! There is an issue of paying for what you use!. Using low-res versions of pics is fine, because that's what the photographers give up when they put it on the web!.!.!. but if you STEAL music and videos and copyright-restricted high-res images for your projects, that's a different law you're breaking!. You're protected by your rights as a student to use content that isn't yours in order to further your education (and not make money) BUT you can't claim "I'm a student" while stealing music or photos or videos!.

So, if you only need a low-res version of a pic, and there's one on a website without a watermark, that pic is up for grabs!. But if you steal, then you're breaking a different law!.

Stock photo sites don't know that you're doing screen grabs, so grab away!Www@QuestionHome@Com

A stock agency would know immediately if you tried copying and pasting images for them to consider because every one that I'm aware of will not accept low grade samples!.

Furthermore, in the process of trying to generate this 'illegal' income, you just might find that the image you copy is contracted by one of the agencies you may have submitted it too and suddenly you are being sued both by the agency and the photographer for libel and copyright infringement!. The infringement alone carries a fine of up to $250,000 and 10 years imprisonment!.!.!. pretty serious stuff (for your reference: USC Title 17, sections 501-506 specify conditions for image copyright and the penalties associated with violations)!.

Great Question!.!.!. oh, I forgot!. It is illegal to do that too!. ;-p

There are various ways that photographers and stock sites know when their images are being used on the web without permission!.
I won't go into how as I use one or two of the methods myself!.

If you are using them in print then it is harder for them to know, that is why most of them put a watermark across the pictures!.

Whether or not they know is not however the main point!.
The main point is it is illegal!.

If you get caught you could get in trouble!. If you use it commercially you'll get in big trouble if caught!. There are image search engines that can compare images on the web to origionals!. I don't know of any stock sites that are using this technology to catch copywrite violators but I am hopeful that will happen some day!.

Some sites have free stock images that you can download and use!. Try the ones listed here: http://istophoto!.googlepages!.com/Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, it depends!. Where are you planning to use these images!? If the image is a pay image (as in, you must pay money for it) and you copy the preview without paying then yes that is illegal because it goes against the image's copyright law about its distribution!. There are ways to check for your image online as well, with services like Tineye!.

Try some free stock websites like sxc!.hu !. Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's illegal to reproduce it!. You can save a picture to your computer!. You can't make prints of it and sell them!. If they have the full resolution, un-watermarked file available for download, chances are they don't care what you do with it non-commercially!. You still can't commit plagiarism or earn anything from it, though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Such sites would either only post very low resolution samples, disable the right click option or put a watermark on their photos!.
If you are doing this for homework, probably not a problem legally as it would only be you and your teacher using it and not for profit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I was fortunate to be a student once also!. I would walk into bank vaults and just remove the cash because I was a student!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
